What Happens During a Professional Dental Cleaning?
A complete veterinary dental cleaning is performed under anesthesia so we can safely and thoroughly examine and clean your pet’s mouth.
Once your pet is anesthetized, the teeth are scaled above and below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar. We then polish the teeth and carefully evaluate the mouth for signs of disease or damage.
Dental X-rays allow us to evaluate the tooth roots and structures beneath the gumline that can’t be assessed by looking at the tooth alone.
If we identify a tooth that’s badly fractured, infected, loose, or otherwise causing pain, extraction may be the best way to restore comfort and oral health. Ocean Animal Hospital also provides dental surgery when a problem requires more involved treatment.

Professional care is only one part of maintaining a healthy mouth. At-home brushing with pet-safe toothpaste can help reduce plaque between veterinary visits. Depending on your pet, dental diets, chews, or other oral-care products may also be useful.
